What Can One Expect At Their First Acupuncture Appointment?
Your treatment will begin with an examination to understand the symptoms you are experiencing, and how your systems are functioning. This is called ‘pattern of disharmony’ in TCM). After discussing any questions and concerns, the practitioner will look at your tongue and pulse to understand how your internal systems are operating and deepen their understanding of your overall state of health.
After your diagnosis has been completed, your acupuncturist will place carefully selected needles all over your body to elicit a therapeutic response. Once completely administered, you will lie comfortably for about 25 -30 minutes while your body responds to the stimulus. Your practitioner will then return, remove the needles, provide a recommended treatment plan, and then you are free to resume normal activity.
You should expect to feel a heightened state of relaxation, so it is best to listen to your body and not overexert yourself post-treatment.
Acupuncture During The Procedure:
Your Acupuncturist will ease you into the procedure and make sure you are comfortable at all times. You will be provided a gown, towel, or a sheet if you need to remove any piece of clothing for your treatment. 5-20 needles are expected to be inserted into your body during the procedure. You will notice a slight aching sensation once a needle reaches the correct path. Every treatment session supports the previous one, as this is a cumulative treatment.
How Often Should You Be Receiving Treatment?
Your treatment plan is solely dependent on the condition you have. Generally, acute conditions take less time and fewer treatments in comparison to chronic conditions. Commonly, patient receive between 6 to 10 treatments for a condition.
Every treatment session supports the previous one, as this is a cumulative treatment that requires time. You will notice that acupuncture is not just for when you are in a state of pain and discomfort, but also for when you want to achieve an overall state of well-being and relaxation. Your first session may take up to an hour while repeat visits usually require about 30 minutes.
Your response to the treatments, treatment plan, and your condition all effects how many times a week and how long your sessions will be (some people experience instant relief at the first session). Your acupuncturist will be sure to tell you all about it on your first visit.
